KATONAH YOGA® – WORKSHOP #1

DAGES JUVELIER KEATES

One’s body is not a project or a problem, it is the place each of us is always and already living from. Embodied practice can turn us toward that reality and away from tendencies to dissociate. To live in each of our changing, growing, yearning, dying, aging bodies is to be in touch with what is profoundly human. Practice is not to degrade oneself or aggrandize oneself, but to find the complexity of life as it is on a human scale.

This intensive will deepen your understanding of Katonah Yoga®’s central metaphors and practices. Your body is your house, your personal abode; you want to know how to have a party and clean it up! We will explore Katonah Yoga® theory applied through:
– Asana
– Adjustments
– Pranayama
– Restoratives
– Body Mapping
– Inner Cartographies including the Magic Square and the Body As A House

1) Asana is origami for bodies
Through vigorous practice, we will break down the angles and measures of Katonah® classics: dogs, hangs, squares, lunges, squats and pigeons. Learn how to use archetypes, the magic square, and formulas for cross referencing to amplify the currency of your asana practice.

2) Pranayama techniques are recipes for joy
Learn Katonah® tools that enable one to be alone with oneself, plumb one’s depths, get whipped up, embody ecstasy, re-orient, and find joy. Sessions will include lecture, demonstration, and plenty of hands-on, attuned adjustments.

Katonah Yoga® is replete with therapeutic techniques, and will focus on individual questions and concerns. We will take time to set up conditions for body reading, adjustments, and attunements of each individual. A private yoga session is different from a group practice. In a private, you tune your instrument, in a class, you play for the symphony! If you have had a taste of Katonah’s singular material and want a broader understanding of theory and practice, this experience is for you.

This module is open to everyone. It is part of our 200hrs Katonah Yoga® certification program. If you wish to participate in the training, please refer to this page. You can also attend the modules individually. By completing the course, you will accredit 30 hours towards the certification Katonah Yoga® program.

KATONAH YOGA® – WORKSHOP #2

Katonah Yoga® theory gives us unique ways to align the body in asanas, using the body’s own measurements and geometry. Learning how to lead one another into the asana, through adjustments and assisting, gives us greater knowledge about the pose itself. For both the teacher and the student, adjustments open up new paths to understanding. It’s like navigating someone into a place where they’ve never been before.

A key element of this 30 hrs intensive training will be learning how to carefully align the asana to make your own practice more stable. We will focus on the adjustments, as well as using different props in the practice. Blocks, quick release-belts, blankets, chairs, bolsters and tennis balls will all be used in new ways, combining what you already know with the new material to make the practice your own. Aligning and adjusting, as well as the use of props, will all build up to a foundation on which you can create your own sequence and home practice. Working on the mat will become more than doing poses, it becomes a place for us to address the patterns in our lives through the patterns in our bodies. Only by becoming conscious of these patterns is it possible to change them. The insight can only come through conscious repetitions. The goal of the teacher training is to build a new habit, to repeat a pose in yoga refining it each time, so it installs new and improved patterns in our physical and psychological lives. Learning how to teach home practices will enable sharing these insights to new students going forward.

This module is open to everyone. It is part of our 200hrs Katonah Yoga® certification program. If you wish to participate in the training, please refer to this page. You can also attend the modules individually. By completing the course, you will accredit 30 hours towards the certification Katonah Yoga® program.

KATONAH YOGA® – WORKSHOP #3

This 30hrs workshop will tackle 2 topics:
– the Katonah Yoga® Material with Elements of Functional Movement
– the translation of the Katonah Yoga® Theory into your mother tongue

1) The Katonah Yoga® Material with Elements of Functional Movement – Reset, renew, redefine

We will take our modern-day bodies through a targeted and intense movement experience that will systematically override our patterns of compensation and poor habits; emphasizing sustainable, freeing, and efficient movement. We will cross-reference Katonah Yoga® Theory with different yoga and movement teachings and practices, seeing Katonah Yoga® in everything. There are so many types of movement, yet Nevine teaches that they are all the same. The purpose is to unify the traditional teachings of yoga with a more modern understanding of the human body by emphasising re-educating compensatory movement strategies that place unnecessary strain on the body.

We will work on:
– Breakdown of frequently used poses and techniques along with their adjustments/modifications
– Working with props: straps, blocks, chairs, poles, sandbags … and when you don’t have any of them
– Gain a deep understanding of the purpose behind every movement so you can teach with confidence
– Refine the process through repetition
– A short glimpse into body readings

2) The Katonah Yoga® Weave – “How to translate the Katonah Yoga® Theory into your mother tongue”
(How to find your own language / voice if English is not your 1st language)

Making the transition from being Katonah Yoga® certified to teaching “The Material” is a big step. Weaving it into your classes in your mother tongue and feeling authentic to yourself and your students seems to be impossible at first. But there is a way. Embody your understanding of the theory and use your imagination to create recipes that work for you and your students both on and off the mat.

This module is open to everyone. It is part of our 200hrs Katonah Yoga® certification program. If you wish to participate in the training, please refer to this page. You can also attend the modules individually. By completing the course, you will accredit 30 hours towards the certification Katonah Yoga® program.
